Our Approach

Most credit card review sites are run by content teams optimizing for search traffic. The Credit Card Compass is different. Our reviews are written by a financial professional with Series 7, 63, and 65 licenses and a Master of Investment Management and Financial Analysis — someone who understands how financial products are structured and how to evaluate their true value.

Every card is reviewed against the same set of weighted criteria. Compensation from affiliate relationships plays no role in our ratings. A card earns its score entirely on its own merits.

Our Rating Criteria

We evaluate each card across six primary criteria. Here is how we weight them and what we look for in each:

💰
Annual Fee Value
25% of total score
We calculate the net annual fee after accounting for all credits and benefits that most cardholders can realistically use. A card with a high fee but generous credits can score well here; a card with a high fee and minimal credits will not.
Rewards Rate
25% of total score
We evaluate earn rates across the categories that matter most — travel, dining, groceries, gas, and everyday spending. We also assess point or mile values, redemption flexibility, and transfer partner quality.
🎁
Sign-up Bonus
20% of total score
We assess the welcome bonus against the spending requirement needed to earn it. A large bonus with an unreasonable spending threshold scores lower than a modest bonus with an achievable requirement.
🛡️
Travel & Purchase Protections
15% of total score
Trip cancellation insurance, rental car coverage, purchase protection, extended warranty, and travel delay benefits. We evaluate coverage limits, eligibility requirements, and how practical the protections are in real-world scenarios.
🔄
Flexibility & Redemption
10% of total score
How easy is it to redeem your rewards? Cards with flexible redemption options — cash back, travel portals, statement credits, and transfer partners — score higher than cards with restrictive or low-value redemption options.
📋
Additional Features
5% of total score
Lounge access, Global Entry credits, hotel status, airline-specific perks, and other benefits that add genuine value for the right cardholder. We assess these based on their actual real-world utility.

How We Maintain Independence

The Credit Card Compass earns revenue through affiliate commissions when readers apply for and are approved for credit cards through our links. We disclose this relationship fully on our Affiliate Disclosure page.

To protect editorial independence, our ratings are determined before any affiliate relationship is established with an issuer. Commission rates are not a factor in our scoring process. We include cards on our site that pay lower commissions or no commissions, when those cards genuinely deserve coverage.

No issuer has editorial control over our content. We do not accept payment for positive ratings. We update negative information about a card even when we have an affiliate relationship with that issuer.

How We Keep Information Current

Credit card terms change frequently — annual fees increase, sign-up bonuses rotate, and benefits are added or removed. We maintain a monthly review process to verify the accuracy of all card information on our site. Each review page displays the date it was last verified.

We also monitor industry publications including The Points Guy, NerdWallet, and Doctor of Credit for real-time updates on card changes. If you notice outdated information on our site, please let us know and we will update it promptly.

Important: Card terms, annual fees, sign-up bonuses, and APR are set by the issuer and can change at any time. Always verify current terms on the issuer's official website before applying. Our reviews are for informational purposes only and do not constitute financial advice.
